Why does my mac save so many copies of all my files?

My new Macbook Pro saves a ton of copies for all the documents I make on the computer. If I search the name of the document in my Finder, it comes out with 20 different copies of the same file. Only, they are not all the same... I think it is saving a new file for every time I save it, instead of overwriting. I cannot find the final copy of my document, because there are so many drafts that have the same name. HELP! How can I stop this? It is taking up space.
