Advice with Chinchillas and Routines...?

My chinchilla, Maximus, required almost constant supervision during his playtime for the first few months because he was constantly trying to escape, chew on things he shouldn't, pee outside of his cage, etc. Since I couldn't watch him directly, I would put him in an exercise ball (Chinchilla/ferret sized hamster ball) while I changed the bedding and cleaned his cage.
