How to change your operating system?

Hi, im currently using windows xp home edition which is not working properly, i was given a windows xp professional disc to overwrite it. Im having a problem doing this because when im half way through installition i get a message saying that im trying to install a defferent version of windows and needs to close. Is there a way round this, can i completly wipe my operating system then install my windows xp professional disc
